While sexual harassment may seem cut and dry, this is not always the case. In fact, some workers are subject to harassment and are not fully aware of it, although these actions may make them feel uncomfortable. Being able to identify ill-treatment is crucial for putting a stop to it, which is why Business Insider offers the following information.  

Behaviors That Make You Feel Uncomfortable

Not all sexual harassment entails unwanted sexual advances. In some cases, it may simply involve behaviors that make you feel uncomfortable, such as comments about a co-worker’s sex life or persistent requests to met after work (usually alone). Your gut feeling may be the best indication that what is occurring isn’t right.

You’re Worried About Repercussions

Management can sometimes play a role in keeping harassment alive at work. For instance, if people who’ve made allegations in the past are looked down on, others may be less likely to do the same. Additionally, management may also pretend that the behavior isn’t a problem or that the person making the complaint is simply a trouble maker. In this instance, the workplace itself could contribute to poor behavior.

The Behavior Won’t Stop

If you’ve made a complaint but the behavior still continues, this could also point to harassment. For instance, if you’ve told the person and then supervisors about the issue and yet nothing was done, your next step may be to file a harassment claim. This is especially true if what’s occurring is creating a hostile work environment, which can impact your career as well as your emotional health and well-being.
